Houdini 3
Sometimes a Mac is a blessing, and sometimes it is a buttfuck. When it is indeed the latter as in the case of not being able to see your hidden files, you have to hand it to the PC nerds.
The case: You have a document on your flash drive that you copied from your Mac. You then copy that file over to a PC. Work on the file for a few hours and voila. It’s done. You print that wonderful two pound 40 page report for your professor, killing a baby tree in the process. You shrug it off because sadly that little sap had to die for you to get a passing C in the class. As soon as that last page slides out of the dot matrix printer; you click delete on your file, ridding it from your life forever – or so you think.
Next time you use your flash drive in your Mac and you don’t have enough room. What gives? You peek into the Trash and you see that 40 page heft sitting cozily inside. But wait, didn’t you delete that little bugger ages ago? Apparently not. You see the file was deleted but moved to a folder called .Trashes. It’s a hidden folder. but on your mac you can’t see it unless you look into the Trash. Your Mac hides all those hidden files to prevent the common idiot from touching it and fucking up all the innards of OS X. So how can you see what is really on your flash drive or computer if you actually do want to tinker with it?
I use Houdini 3. It’s a great little app that’s so simple it should be included with OS X. Fire it up and you have two large buttons. “Toggle File Visibility” and “Browse Hidden Files.” It’s pretty straightforward. Two large buttons can’t boggle the mind right?
